KITZINGEN

WHEN PLANNING OUR JOURNEY FROM ROTHENBURG TO MESPELBRUNN
I KNEW THAT IT WAS ONLY 2 1/2 HOURS SO.... WHAT TO SEE ALONG THE
WAY? I EQUIPPED MYSELF WITH GOOGLE MAPS AND IMAGES AND
CHECKED OUT ALL THE PLACES I COULD FIND ALONG THE WAY AND
CAME UP WITH THIS CUTE PLACE CALLED KITZINGEN.

WELL AS WE DROVE INTO TOWN, HOWIE AND BIRGIT THOUGHT IT LOOKED
LIKE A WASTE OF TIME..... BUT I WAS PERSISTANT. I KNEW THAT THIS PLACE
HAD SOME OF THE NICEST RIVER SCENERY I HAD SEEN WHILST PLANNING
THE TRIP.

SO WE FOUND A PARKING PLACE AND WENT FOR A WANDER.....
FINALLY COMING ACROSS THAT RIVER I HAD SEEN. WELL WE WERE ALL
NICELY SURPRISED :) THE FORESHORE WAS LINED WITH THESE LOVELY
FLOWERS. SAW A COUPLE OF BARGES AND SOME SWANS AND DUCKS.

OK, AUSSIROSE STORY TIME!..... OH COME ON! YOU KNOW YOU LOVE
MY STORIES ..... LOL )

TRUTH IS.... THINGS DID NOT GO AS SMOOTHLY AS I STATED AT THE
OUTSET.

WE SET THE TRUSTY TOM TOM GPS TO THE LOCAL COP STATION.
TURNS OUT THAT KITZINGEN POLICE STATION IS NOT IN THE HEART OF TOWN.
HAHA.

CONSEQUENTLY, THAT IS WHY HUBBY AND BIRGIT WERE WONDERING WHY I
HAD BROUGHT US HERE? STILL.... HUBBY AND I FOUND STUFF TO TAKE
PHOTOS OF ;) ...... MEANWHILE, BIRGIT WAS STILL STRATCHING HER HEAD.
BIRGIT LIVES IN BERLIN SO THIS SCENERY IS 'EVERY DAY' STUFF FOR HER :)

NARROW COBBLESTONE STREETS AND CUTE ENTRY WAYS ARE
FASCINATING TO US. WE DON'T HAVE THAT IN AUSTRALIA.

OK..... MUST BE BEER O'CLOCK :)

WE FOUND A LITTLE MALL DEVOID OF TOURISTS. HOW QUAINT! :)
IT WAS NICE TO EAT WITH THE LOCALS.

PRIMED WITH A COLDIE WE RE-ASSESSED OUR SITUATION.

Tip_-_Beer.jpg

Tip_-_Cobblestone_streets.jpg

KITZINGEN IS A NICE LITTLE OFF THE BEATEN PATH VILLAGE INDEED!
WE WERE ALL IMPRESSED :)
A DETOUR THROUGH KITZINGEN WAS MOST CERTAINLY WORTH OUR TIME :)

WURZBURG

A GRAND PALACE ON TOP OF A HILL WITH STUNNING CITY VIEWS!

E5C7A93FD4D75D8BC85A343134B80B70.jpg

DSCF1259.jpg

I HAD HEARD ABOUT THIS FROM READING MICHAEL'S (globetrott) PAGES ON
VIRTUALTOURIST. MICHAEL'S SUGGESTIONS TO VISIT IN GERMANY PROVED
TO BE VERY HELPFUL.

BIRGIT AND HOWIE WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. I LOOKED AT ALL
THOSE STEPS LEADING UP..... AND IT WAS THE THOUGHT OF A COOL BEER
AT THE END OF THE ROAD THAT KEPT ME GOING LOL.

WELL THIS PALACE WAS IMPRESSIVE. IT WAS OUR FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH A
PALACE :) THERE WERE A LOT OF FIRST'S FOR US ON THIS TRIP ;)

29_Wurzburg.jpg

THE VIEW WAS MORE IMPRESSIVE.

AFTER A WANDER AROUND THE COURTYARDS AND A BIT OF A READ OF THE
PLACARDS WE HEADED TO THE NICE SHADY COURTYARD FOR A TASTY ALE.

MELPELBRUNN

STORY OF A CUTE CASTLE ON A POND.

30B_Mespelbrunn.jpg

WHEN PLANNING THE CAR TRIP THROUGH GERMANY, I HAD
ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER ON THE LIST AND THE NEXT THING
TO SEE WAS THE RHINE RIVER. SO ARMED WITH GOOGLE MAPS, IMAGES
AND VT PAGES, I WAS LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO STAY OVERNIGHT ALONG
THE WAY.

MESPELBRUNN CASTLE

I FOUND IT! MESPELBRUNN AND THIS CUTE CASTLE ON A POND IN THE
MIDDLE OF THE FOREST. THANKS AGAIN MICHAEL!

THIS WAS OUR FIRST CASTLE EXPERIENCE. ANOTHER FIRST FOR US :)

WE STAYED OVERNIGHT AT A HOTEL RECOMMENDED BY INGRID (Trekki).
THE PLACE THAT MICHAEL STAYED AT WAS NEAR THE CASTLE.... BUT A LITTLE
TOO EXPENSIVE FOR US.

Michael's Choice.

Michael's Choice.

THE FOREST WAS LOVELY AND GREEN AND A PLEASURE TO WALK THROUGH.
THE FIRST SIGHTING OF THE CASTLE WAS EVERYTHING THAT I HAD IMAGINED!

PIC_0035.jpg

30A_Mespelbrunn.jpg

NOT BEING A HISTORY BUFF, I FOUND MYSELF IMAGINING THE PURE
INGENIOUS IDEA OF BUILDING A CASTLE IN THE FOREST, HIDDEN FROM THE
ENEMY WITH THE ADDED ADVANTAGE OF A POND AND MOAT.
THE INHABITANTS WERE NO DOUBT A LOT SMARTER THAN SOME OF THE
OTHERS THAT BUILt THEIR CASTLES IN OPEN VIEW ON TOP OF A HILL :)

I WAS CAPTIVATED WITH THE LOVELY POND AND SHIMMERING REFLECTIONS
IN THE STILL WATER.

HOTEL ZUM ENGEL
www.mespelbrunn-hotel-engel.de

WE STAYED HERE AT THE HOTEL ZUM ENGEL ON THE SUGGESTION OF
LOCAL INGRID (Trekki) ON VT. THE OWNERS JUST LOVE AUSSIES :)

I AM GLAD THAT WE CHOSE THIS ONE. WE WERE CERTAINLY MADE TO
FEEL LIKE ROYALTY BY THE OWNERS AND OUR ROOM OVERLOOKED THE
FOREST WHICH WAS A PLEASANT VIEW AFTER OUR CAR TRIP.

I WOULD TOTALLY RECOMMEND TO STAY HERE. WE REALLY ENJOYED IT.
I WOULD DESCRIBE THIS HOTEL AS ELEGANT WITH PERSONALISED SERVICE.

TORREMOLINOS, LA ALHAMBRA GARDENS. MIJAS, RONDA SPAIN

6 Week Trip

View 2011 Europe & Morocco on aussirose's travel map.

FAVOURITE PHOTO

SPAIN WAS HUBBY'S CHOICE.

THIS WAS OUR LAST COUNTRY IN AN AMAZING 6 WEEK
ADVENTURE THROUGH EUROPE STARTING IN ZURICH AND
DRIVING THROUGH GERMANY AND BELGIUM TO AMSTERDAM.

THEN FAST TRAIN TO PARIS WHERE WE HAD AN AMAZING
TIME INCLUDING A BIG VIRTUALTOURIST MEET.

THEN TO MOROCCO WHERE WE EXPERIENCED A TASTE OF
THE EXOTIC... INCLUDING A 5 DAY SAHARA DESERT TRIP TO
DIE FOR!

IF YOU ARE THINKING OF VISITING ANY OF THE ABOVE
PLACES THEN PLEASE CHECK OUT MY BLOGS. MAYBE I CAN
BE OF ASSISTANCE IN HELPIING YOU PLAN YOUR TRIP :)

WE FLEW FROM CASABLANCA TO MALAGA AND PICKED UP
OUR HIRE CAR TO DRIVE TO TORREMOLINOS.

TORREMOLINOS

258530636042538-Apartamentos..rremolinos.jpg

OUR VIEW FROM HOTEL APARTAMENTOS BAJONDILLO.
SUGGESTED BY VT VETERANS HANSI AND LORI WHO STAY
HERE REGULARLY EACH FEBRUARY TO GET AWAY FROM THE
COLD IN CANADA :)

TORREMOLINOS WAS A GREAT PLACE TO BASE OURSELVES.

THE 2 THINGS THAT WE CHOSE TO DO WERE LA ALHAMBRA PALACE
AND GARDENS AND RONDA IN THE ANDALUCIA MOUNTAINS.

LA ALHAMBRA

I HAD HEARD THAT THE PARKING HERE WAS DIFFICULT, SO
I BOOKED OUR DAY TRIP THROUGH VIATOR INCLUDING
PICKUP FROM A HOTEL IN GRANADA.

WE DROVE TO THE HOTEL IN GRANADA AND PARKED OUTSIDE.
WE WERE PICKED UP FROM THERE. THIS WORKED WELL.

HUBBY STUDIED THE GARDENS OF LA ALHAMBRA AS PART OF
HIS LANDSCAPE DESIGN COURSE IN HORTICULTURE.
HOWIE WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS DAY :)

I MUST ADMIT, THE BEAUTIFUL GARDENS, WATER PONDS AND
FEATURES WERE A DELIGHT TO SEE. THERE'S SOMETHING SPECIAL
ABOUT GARDENS AND THE SIGHT AND SOUNDS OF RUNNING
WATER :)

WE WERE DAZZLED BY THE INTRICATE TILE WORK INSIDE.
THERE WAS OBVIOUSLY A DISTINCT MOROCCAN INFLUENCE.
WE HAD SEEN SIMILAR TILES IN KASBAHS IN MOROCCO.

WE EXPERIENCED ANOTHER FIRST HERE IN SOUTHERN SPAIN.
THERE WERE MANY FIRSTS ON THIS BIG HOLIDAY LIKE HUGH
CHIMING CLOCKS, QUAINT COBBLEDSTONE STREETS, CRUISING
CANALS, MANY CASTLES, A GRAND PALACE, RIDING HORSE AND
CARRIAGE, OLD HISTORICAL KASBAHS, SLEEPING UNDER THE
STARS IN THE SAHARA.

TODAY WE WERE ABOUT TO RIDE A CONVERTIBLE CAR THROUGH
THE ADNALUCIAN MOUNTAINS. YES, OUR HIRE CAR WAS A
BLACK CONVERTIBLE :)

MIJAS

THE MOUNTAIN SCENERY WAS STUNNING. WE PASSED A BIG
TORO BULL STATUE ON THE HILL.

481197566046033-aussirose_lo..pain_Ronda.jpg

MIJAS AND IT'S GLORIOUS WHITEWASHED HOUSES WAS LOVELY.
UNFORTUNATELY, AS WE DROVE SLOWLY THROUGH TOWN, WE
COULD NOT FIND A PARKING SPOT, SO WE KEPT HEADING
TOWARDS RONDA.

FUNNY AUSSIROSE STORY.

WE ARRIVED IN RONDA AND THE PLACE WAS FLOODED WITH
LIKEMINDED TOURISTS. WHERE TO PARK?...

AS THERE WERE NO PARKING SPOTS IN TOWN, WE DROVE
OUT A BIT AND FINALLY FOUND ONE. WE STEPPED OUT,
LOCKED UP AND HOLLERED FOR A TAXI.

WELL ALL WENT WELL. A TAXI TURNED UP IN ABOUT 10
SECONDS...... GREAT! :)

WE JUMPED IN AND A BIT OF SIGN LANGUAGE LATER,
FINALLY GOT THE TAXI DRIVER TO TAKE US INTO THE TOWN
CENTRE.

BUT THEN...... OMG!!.... WE DIDN'T HAVE A CLUE WHERE WE
HAD LEFT OUR CAR!.... AND NO WAY OF FINDING IT!!
WHAT TO DO?!!..... nervous lol.

WELL THANKFULLY WITH THE HELP OF THE TAXI DRIVER'S
PHONE AND GOOGLE, WE WERE ABLE TO TRANSLATE TO THE
LOVELY DRIVER TO MEET US AGAIN AT 3.30PM TO TAKE US
BACK TO OUR CAR. PHEW!!! :)

RONDA

WHY RONDA?... WE HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS PLACE BEFORE
READING ALL ABOUT IT ON LORIPORI's PAGE ON VIRTUALTOURIST.

THIS IS WHAT RONDA IS FAMOUS FOR....

STUNNING HEY!! :)

PUENTE NUEVO (TRANSLATED NEW BRIDGE), SPANNING OVER A 120M CHASM
THAT SEPARATES 2 PARTS OF THE TOWN, TOOK 34 YEARS TO BUILD.

IT IS NOT THE ORIGINAL BRIDGE. THAT ONE WAS NOT BUILT SOLIDLY
ENOUGH AND COLLAPSED KILLING 50 PEOPLE.

OUR FIRST LOOK AT A BULL FIGHTING RING.

I AM NOT IMPRESSED WITH WHAT I HAVE LEARN'T ABOUT THIS SPORT.
IT'S ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE WHAT THEY DO TO THE POOR BULLS.
I AM GLAD THAT IS HAS BEEN RULED OUT NOW IN MOST PLACES IN SPAIN.

868177156053085-Ronda_Spain_..rose_Ronda.jpg

THE CENTRE OF TOWN NEAR THE BRIDGE WAS A HIVE OF ACTIVITY.
WE TOOK A SHORT STOLL ACROSS THE BRIDGE AND DID A BIT OF
GIFT SHOPPING INCLUDING A NICE LEATHER BELT FOR HUBBY.
THEN FOUND A QUAINT CAFE JUST ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE
BRIDGE AND SAT OUTSIDE UNDER THE SHADE SALE AND HAD A
NICE LIGHT LUNCH WASHED DOWNS WITH A COUPLE OF SAN MIGUELS.

LUCKY FOR US.... OUR FRIENDLY TAXI DRIVER ARRIVED ON TIME
AT 3.30 :)

A STROLL AROUND TORREMOLINOS

THE BEACH HERE REMINDED US OF OUR GOLD COAST BEACH
IN AUSTRALIA.

579728416037834-aussirose_th..rremolinos.jpg

SPAIN IS RENOUN FOR FRESH SEAFOOD SO OF COURSE WE HAD TO
GIVE IT A TRY. WE CHOSE A RESTAURANT RIGHT ON THE BEACH -
PESCAITOS. UNFORTUNATELY, THE SEAFOOD WAS A BIT TASTELESS.
WE ARE TOO SPOILT FOR FRESH SEAFOOD IN AUSTRALIA :)

BUT WHERE THE FOOD LACKED, THE STAFF AND SERVICE CERTAINLY
MADE UP FOR THAT. THE OWNER WAS HAPPY FOR A PHOTO.

A LOVEL FLOWERING BOAB TREE. I RECOGNISED THIS BECAUSE
WE HAVE THEM IN AUSTRALIA.

I ENJOYED OUR TAPPAS DINNER HERE AT EL DORADO.

186368116043382-El_Dorado_re..rremolinos.jpg

AND OF COURSE EVERYWHERE WE GO, HUBBY AND I ENJOY
TASTING THE LOCAL BEER :)
